Victoria Gazeley on Modern Homestead

I hear the sounds of Green Acres when I hear folks talk about going back to the land. I'm part city girl. I can relate to a fictional situation comedy about wanting to be back in nature.

I also know the reality of spending time with my grandmother. I chopped wood, drew well water and kept an I out for that rooster.

Not everybody can go back to farm life but you might want to consider incorporating a bit of it in your life.

This is Victoria Gazeley who lives in Canada. In this video she talks about her reasons for moving out of the city and living as close as she can to a modern homesteading life.

Her blog can be found at ModernHomesteading.ca

Craft Based Videos Created by Women

Women create all kinds of video content. The crafting community is no exception.

This video by Corrinne at Craftvision for the magazine Craftzine on Top 10 Favorite DIY Wedding Dress Ideas and Inspirations.

Just as there are a bunch of people who do not want to get traditionally married there are folks that do but they want their own look and style to be represented. There are others that want to look good but do not have the cash for a $15,000 gown.

For the DYI folks, this is for you.

Rebecca MacKinnon Talk at TED Global

It is true that the more freedom you think you have the more the powers that be want to take it away. For your own good of course. To protect you.

So they say.

There are voices that state otherwise; this is one of them in an excellent talk at the 2011 TED Global Conference in Edinburgh, Scottland.

Sasha Sumner - WaterYouGonnaDo

Sasha's video is simple. What is the connection to water and life? In the notes that accompany this video she writes:
Hydraulic fracturing, known as “fracking” for short, is a means of extracting gas from underground through pressurized injection of water, sand and chemicals. The process not only releases the gas, but also contaminates the water and air with radioactive materials, heavy metals, and toxic chemicals.

Now view the video with that information in your mind. It does put a different swing on it. You can view more of Sasha's videos at her Vimeo page.

Hilah Johnson - Vegetarian Lasagna

Hilah is the host of Hilah Cooking. Start with some whiskey, and a touch of attitude and you got seven minutes of coolness. It is a cooking show for newbies but that doesn't cut down on the punk meet Mad Men factor.

Now before you roll up your lip think about this. She and her partner are producing high quality videos. There is a web site/blog where they get to show what they can do. They have books for sale or to give away to gather a mailing lists.

Ring a ding, you have a smart forward thinking approach to permission selling to their community and providing a service that other people can and will talk about.

You should definitely go to her web site where you can download a copy of her book, The Breakfast Tacos Book and to check out her recipes. Or not. But do understand that there is a diversity in how women are using web video.

Caroline Casey - Shamanic Astrology Part 1

This is Caroline Casey who has a radio show on KPFA called Visionary Activist. Those of you in the Los Angeles area can hear her show on KPFK 90.7 at 5:00am Friday mornings.

Caroline will take you places you did not know existed. Linguistically, it is like riding a bike and trying to keep up with the scenery as you pedal as fast as you can.

The word pictures and the full intent of meaning are for those that are open to just listening and being with what she has to say. You don't have to agree.

It might help if you don't at first. It is a challenge in this space and time just to have the patience to listen to another person without pressing fast forward.

Give it a go.

Speaking for Planned Parenthood - Video Advocacy

One of the things that I feel is important is that video can provide a platform for women to share their own thought and feelings about a topic. Not a talking point or a position from a non-profit but from a specific person's point of view.

Beyond the posturing and misogyny running rampant this is Andrea Grimes telling how de-funding Planned Parenthood will affect her life. This is an example of how web video can be used to present your views on a topic. You can read more about Andrea at her blog or her channel on YouTube.

Saving the Family History - Geneology in the Face of Katrina

It is extremely necessary to continue to collect and maintain our historical history and heritage. Documentation can come in all forms such as photos, bibles or letters from family members.

A natural disaster can wipe out years of preservation efforts by the family.

This is an example of a woman saving her family's history and legacy before Hurricane Katrina destroyed her family home.

SIS Oral History Project - Mrs. Ann Cooper

This past weekend I asked an older poet when she would give me permission to record her on video. Her response was, "Probably never."

I respect her decision and will allow a few more months to elapse on before I ask again. But this video by the Spellman Oral History Project is the reason I keep asking older women to allow themselves to be recorded.

Mrs. Cooper at 108 has made her transition to the upper realm. In this short video she has graced us with a life that is far deeper than we know and has possible clues about on how shall we go forward.

It is the time when the oppressive infomercials appear on broadcast and cable television. And the diet ads. And the Perfect people who implore you to spend mega bucks on getting the perfect body.

What if you are a real person? A person with a body that you have to take care of but you will never, ever be 5 feet and 7 inches? You know what? You do what you can where you can.

This is Deb Roby and she is demonstrating 10 examples of stuff you can do from home. Deb has a blog called Weight Loss for Deb where she talks about the truth of losing and gaining weigh.

It is a challenge and a process that does not involve tanning, Daisy Dukes or greasing up your legs so that they shine pretty for the camera.
